Community Server issues that seem affect this blog

Ok, I thought I'd summarize the known issues from my end, just so people know I am hearing the feedback and paying attention. :-)

I am ignoring the Comment issues as thats more of a "convenience for me" thing as opposed to actual functionality that may affect you, the reader of the blog.

So here goes....

BUG #1: Full search results are unavailable.

Ok, go to http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/ and search for a topic with a lot of hits, like "collation".

Results: 46 hits.

Ok, I like collation. :-)

Page 1: http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/search.aspx?q=Collation&p=1

At the bottom of the page are links to further pages on the serach, but every one of them is blank.

I can see the right results with common sense modifications:

http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/search.aspx?q=Collation&p=2
http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/search.aspx?q=Collation&p=3
http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/search.aspx?q=Collation&p=4

but the links at the bottom of the page that are supposed to lead to future pages do not go to those pages. So you can't ever see other results.

Bug #2: Archive links are incomplete

The archive at http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/ claims for some months to have over 60 posts, but most of them cannot be seen when you click on the link.

There are not even links to further pages like with search, or indications of how to get there.

Example: March 2005 (63 posts): http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/archive/2005/03.aspx

Bug #3: Post category links are also incomplete

Maybe the same issue as #2, but Post Categories have the same problem -- you have no way to get all of the posts in a category.

There are no further pages like with search, or indications of how to get there.

Example: Category Keyboards http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/archive/category/7994.aspx

This link will not go further back than January 19th but I know there are older posts there. There is no way to know how to go further back.

The combination of these three problems makes it such that large parts of the blog are unreachable unless you know exactly what you want. I have had people who have thought that the blog might be a great way to get a really big "interantional immersion" going on, but that does not work so well if you cannot get to everything that is there....

Otherwise I am pretty happy with stuff here. Hopefully readers are too, if not let me know if you have found other issues?

Though I may have to put the calendar back if it is the only way that people can link to those older posts. :-)

Your posts tend to be in-depth, verbose, and well-supported with diagrams and code.

Good.

However the three-column layout creates vast empty spaces on the left and right of the page, under the first and third column.

If you're at 800x600 resolution like me, it makes it hard to read your posts. I've occasionally had to resort to copy/pasting into Notepad.

Ok, that counts as more of an issue for me to consider changes for. :-)

Well, I currently use Marvin3 with customizations. Interestingly search results do what you would like and make good use of the "white space" under the columns, even though the usual aggregate page does not. Mayb I will look at some of the other skins....

Glad you are liking the blog though, in any case. :-)

Consider this post:

Here's a partial screenshot of how it looks for me:

That's what you get using a version 1.0 product :)

# Michael S. Kaplan on 5 May 2005 7:11 PM:

Hey Dean!

Well, I can't argue with that. Hopefully they will fix stuff, though....
