The specific advice was to do with shell extensions and their "guest" status in the world of Windows Explorer, but the general principle is something that can be and should be applied quite broadly....

Sometimes letting your visitors change the color of the carpet is the right thing to do, if you want them to keep coming to dinner. Otherwise they just go to your neighbor, that lets them change the carpet altogether...
